Ornaments in a Bach's French suite
on: June 30, 2009, 12:21:44 PM
Hi, everybody !
I'm currently working on the Menuet II from the French suite no. 1 in D minor by Bach. At bar 3, there is an ornament in the right hand. It does not look like a trill. How shall I play it ?
I use Henle 's edition, but you can see the same ornaments on this edition :

Those ornaments don't appear the table exposed in the preface of my edition, visible at this adress in the first reply :

Has anyone played this ? Can anybody help ? Thank you.

Play A-Bb-C. I'd put A on the main beat.
The name of it escapes me at the moment.
One well known example of this is Bach's Erbarme Dich from the St. Matthew Passion.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Hi, beethoven_fan !
I have done some research on the Internet. It is called 'Schleifer' in German, slide in English. Quantum is right about the execution : you should play the A on the beat.
