Repertoire for an audition to the DMA program
on: November 15, 2002, 10:20:14 PM
Repertoire for the doctorate program in piano. Has anyone prepared an audition for this degree and can you suggest piano works that would be suitable for this type of audition? Rach

Hi!
Well, I didn't need such a repertoire yet, but a few of my friends are going to have an audition to the DMA program next year, so I asked them what repertoire they are planning to play.
Nearly all of them include a Chopin Scherzo, mostly the first one, but some also play the 2nd; one also plays the Barcarolle, a very exciting piece, I think.
There's also a lot of Liszt pieces appearing within the list, including the Mephisto Waltz and some of his Paganini etudes.
Besides, everyone plays a Sonata by Beethoven, mostly of the late period.
For the modern pieces, the range is quite broad - there are Scriabin Sonata's (4th and 7th, if I remember that right), Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin or le gaspard de la nuit, and also a lot of Debussy, mostly a selection of his preludes.
For polyphonic music there are two major composers: Bach and Shostakovich.
Here in Germany you also need to prepare two piano concerto's, and among these my friends are working on are Prokofieff's 3rd, Liszt's second, Brahm's first, the Grieg concerto and Beethoven's 3rd.
I don't know if that helps you in any way, but maybe it gives you some idea about what you should prepare.
There's certainly a great amount of literature that might be possible, too...let me know what you chose.
Good luck and regards,
