Classical Encyclopedia?
on: June 27, 2004, 11:50:01 AM
Any suggestions for encyclopedias for music. I have seen many that cover all music, or just jazz, etc. But I don't recall seeing any that are specifically designed for classical piano/music. Would appreciate any suggestions, and where to find.

Thanks much,
s :)

well there's Grove of course and that's good. also one we were recommended to get for uni was 'a history of western music' by grout and palisca- that's got info on many composers and stuff, mainly focusing on classical composers and western music. is that the type of thing you want?

Yes, as Tash said, Grove is the best. However, you will need a bit of shelf space and a large wallet! (29 volumes!  :P He he ;D)

More manageable are “The Oxford companion to music” (Ed. by Scholes – Oxford University Press) and the Larousse Encyclopaedia of Music (Ed. by Geoffrey Hindley – Hamlyn). They are only one volume each and cover pretty much everything. I do not know of any similar work dedicated exclusively to the piano, although there is “The Cambridge companion to the piano” (Cambridge University Press) which is very interesting, but not really an encyclopaedia.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Thanks much you guys. Yes, they sound like what I am looking for. Will check at Barnes and Nobles this week, assuming I can get them at regular bookstore?

Appreciate your help!

ah yes it is quite fat. forgot that cos we get to use grove music online free via uni. however you can subscribe to it so you have it via the web whenever you want, and it's the whole thing i think. you can look at that at www.grovemusic.com

you should be able to get the grout and palisca book possibly from most bookshops, i know you can get it at borders here in aust
