Which concerto should I play?
on: September 11, 2009, 07:40:10 PM
Hi there

I`ve recently studied Schumann`s (Liszt) Widmung, Chopin Ballade no 3 and etude op. 25 no. 1 and 12. I`ve never studied a concerto before, but I think it`s time to do so now... any suggestions are welcome... (Preferably Beethoven and or Mozart)

Based on the level suggested by your pieces recently studied, along with your preference for Mozart or Beethoven, I would suggest Beethoven #1 or #3 (although, as suggested by AC, the #4 has a beautiful level of romanticism which separates it a little from earlier, and more classical, works - but is a little more difficult than the forementioned works). The Mozart D Minor K 466 concerto is also a rewarding classical work to play.

All the best in learning your chosen work.

What about Beethoven no 2? Is the first movement tricky? As a viola player I have played it in an orchestra and I absolutely fell in love with the piece..

Personally I found Beethoven #1 an excellent introduction to piano concertos, many years ago...

Beethoven 2, Mendelssohn 1, and Prokofiev 1 are all good starter concerti.

Choose a Mozart concerto.  It will make you grow musically. Plus, there are many to choose from.

May be it's not completely ontopic, but I don't want to make a new topic. Small question for people who played some Mozart concertos. Can someone rank those from 'easy to difficult', with the accent on the technical part :)

No. 15
No. 17
No. 19
No. 20
No. 21
No. 23
No. 24
No. 27

Thanks :)
Currently learing:
- Chopin: Ballade No.3
- Scriabin: Etude Op. 8 No. 2
- Rachmaninoff: Etude Op. 33 No. 6
- Bach: P&F No 21 WTC I

15
17 (presto bit at the end is rather tricky)
21

I would say these two are about the same—maybe—?

27
20 (first movement is awkward is some places)

I haven't played the others you mentioned. 21 is the most fun to play, I think.

So you say the first mouvement of No. 20 is more difficult than the last mouvement?

Stamitz would make an excellent 1st concerto (if this is indeed your first).

As good as most Mozart concerti (in my humble opinion).

So you say the first mouvement of No. 20 is more difficult than the last mouvement?

I'm saying 20 is a little harder than 27, because of its first movement (for me). The first movement of 27 is fairly straightforward.

Hey there Christian!

In order of difficulty (just based on the first movements), I'd say
# No 2
# No 1
# No 3

Trust this helps.

Stop studying and maybe it will come to you?!  You cannot feel the music when you are locked up inside yourself thinking!  Isn't it true that the music sometimes feels you?
