What piano pieces should I start?
on: September 13, 2009, 06:16:31 PM
I'm having trouble with a bunch of pieces to choose from to start. Every once in a while, I will have new ones I'll want to start. Here is the list:
Valse Oubliee No.1 by Franz LIszt
Puck Op.71 No.3 from Lyrical pieces by Edvard Grieg
Liebeslied by Fritz Kreisler transcribed for piano by Sergei Rachmaninov
Waltz Op.70 No.1 by Frederic Chopin
Hopak from the Sorochintsy Fair for Young Ukranians by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (Something like that...)
Etude Op.10 No.9 by Frederic Chopin
The Sighing Wind Op.102 No.4 from Songs Without Words by Felix Mendelssohn
Jardins sous la Pluie from Estampes by Claude Debussy
Pagodes from Estampes by Claude Debussy
Valse Op.posthumous by Frederic Chopin (The one in E major. So beautiful!)
Nuages Gris by Franz Liszt
Schummerlied Op.124 No.16 from Album Leaves by Robert Schumann
Kuriose Geschichte from Kinderszenen by Robert Schumann
Moment Muscial Op.94 No.1 or 3 by Franz Schubert
Toccata from Pour le Piano by Claude Debussy
Elegie Op.2 No.1 by Sergei Rachmaninov
Etude Op.10 No.11 (Arpeggio) by Frederic Chopin
Winterzeit II from Album for the Young by Robert Schumann
Impromptu Op.90 No.3 or 4 by Franz Schubert
Prelude Op.32 No.12 by Sergei Rachmaninov
Etude-tableaux Op.39 No.8 by Sergei Rachmaninov
Night-Vision 3 Op.23 No.3 from Night Visions by Robert Schumann
Au lac de Wallenstandt from Anees de pelerniage, First Year: Switzerland by Franz Liszt
The Seamstress by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky
Lost Illusions Op.67 No.2 from Songs Without Words by Felix Mendelssohn
Hungarian Dance No.4 or 7 for piano solo or four-hands, and No.11 or 18 for four-hands
Vogel als Prophet from Waldeszenen by Robert Schumann

A very long list! :P
Currently working on:
*Prelude, Op.23 N.4 (Rachmaninoff)
*Prelude & Fugue in F major, WTC II (Bach)
...not fully decided on what else to start (most likely will be a Liszt, Schubert, or Medtner)...

If you are passionate start with Beehtoven Moonlight Sonata... plebeian I know...  I'm not saying to finish with that... but merely to start with it...

dear lrfan:
welcome! it's a beautiful list, with a great deal of 19th century music. since the level of complexity is very wide (from kinderszenen to estampes there is a complete piano course...), i must ask you: what do you play already? if "to start" means "to start playing the piano at all", i'd rather tell you to look for a teacher; if it means "to start something new, after those 20 years playing the piano on a regular basis", i'd say to think not about a piece, but a recital... 8)

best!
