Buying Digital Baby Grand
on: September 21, 2009, 09:14:57 PM
First off I'm new here so ill start by saying hello.

I recently moved and find myself with a lot more space. I decided that I want to get a digital baby grand and get ride of my stand up. I live in a duplex so it has to be digital. My price cap is 4k (very firm). My local music store has nothing. where should I start looking and is that a good price range.

whats the point of a digital 'grand', since its digital?
Digitals sound crap anyway without headphones, and if you invest more money in a digital piano, you dont get more quality, only more 'bleeps'.

A digital will not sound as beautiful as a good acoustic piano, but most good digitals can sound better than a cheap acoustic piano. Sound quality aside, there are real-world reasons to prefer a digital over an acoustic. I would never try to talk someone out of a digital piano if that is what they really want.

If you've read my reply properly, you would have noticed i'm not against digitals, i just dont see why anybody would by a digital 'grand' instead of a digital 'upright'.

That's a question of taste.

But of course digital keyboards have their place, for silent practice and portability. Digital 'grands' sell largely on the fact that they have more space to build in better loudspeakers, but you could always link a smaller keyboard to a decent hi-fi.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

Some of the deficiencies of console digital pianos are eliminated in the mini-grand digitals. In particular, the mini-grands have MUCH better sound systems. If found the Roland RG-1 to be excellent ... but too expensive for me. It was $7000 "straight-up", but I'd was convinced I could negotiate a deal at $5000.

That's still too much for me, and too much for the poster, who stands firm at $4000.

I'm afraid there's nothing that I know of that's available for $4000. Well maybe... just maybe a CLP265. But it's not worth the money.  It's just a mini-grand cabinet wrapped around a bottom-of-the-line Clavinova. I'd stay away from that one.

The CLP-295 is (reportedly) much better. But not available for $4000.

Maybe you can find something used?
