Composers influenced by Scriabin
on: October 06, 2009, 02:23:22 PM
I'm searching out composers who's work has been influenced by the music of Scriabin.  Any suggestions?

William Baines is the first one to spring to my mind, although it is not evident in all of his works.

Perhaps the preludes and poeme for piano & orchestra are the most Scriabinesque.

However, I am no expert on Scriabin and no expert on Baines.

Come to think of it, i am no expert on anything.

Baines I wouldn't say has an outright Scriabin influence. However, there is a long list of composers who did. The most notable example in my mind is Nikolai Roslavets. His 3 extant piano sonatas and his three very difficult etudes show this influence greatly, and they are great pieces in their own right. Alexander Mosolov also is another composer who shows this influence, but his music has a bit more punch to it. His piano sonatas and nocturnes are recommended. There is also Arthur Lourié (another Russian, don't let the name fool you) who composed many works influenced by Scriabin. There are more neglected composers like Sergei Protopopov who have also composed some works indebted to Scriabin. A champion of a lot of this music is the pianist Steffen Schleiermacher, who has recorded many works by these composers. Hamelin has also recorded the complete piano works of Roslavets.

Some of Frank Bridge's piano music was strongly influenced by Scriabin's.

Scriabin influenced composers like Sergei Prokofiev, Nikolai Roslavets, and Igor Stravinsky, although Scriabin was reported to have disliked Prokofiev's and Stravinsky's music.[1]

I personally haven't heard the influence myself, but I can highly recommend Frank Bridge's piano sonata, which I believe is one of the most neglected masterpieces of its time.

I've read that Dane Rudhyar, O. Messiaen and several little known other composers (inc. Alexander Nemtin, who "realized" Scriabin's "Prefertory Action" (for the Final Mystery) which is the only composition that he is noted for), but just how they each were influenced is conjecture.

I've only recently heard the Bridge Sonata but I agree it's a sadly overlooked work.
