Private teaching in London
on: October 11, 2009, 02:29:21 AM
Hi
I am looking for private piano tuition in London. I want the best teacher I can find, as I want to be an international concert pianist. If anybody can give me some names, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I can recommend my old teacher Richard Meyrick. He has a studio in London.

Anyone that can put up with me for 2 years has the patience of a saint.

Damned good teacher, even better pianist and his sight reading is so good, it just used to make me laugh.

Thanks. I met him when he came to our university to do a recital. He played mostly virtuoso repertoire. Lightning fingers! I've already considered him, but he charges £80, which is too much for me at the moment, but I see by his website he is one of the best teachers in London.

He charges about half that when he teaches from home, so it might be worth considering for the sake of a 40 minute train journey.

does he come to cambridge by any chance sometime in the week?
You either do or do not. There is no try- Yoda

Another fantastic pianist I know about is called Mark Gasser. He is worth checking up.

I know a guy who is a fantastic teacher. His website is: piano lessons london

I have just visited the link.  The teacher in question is a 31 year old pianist called Georges Sokol.  He graduated from the Conservatoir in Aix-en-Provence and obtained a diploma from the Royal College of Music.

I then checked out his entry on musicteachers.co.uk and was shocked to see that he charges £110 pounds an hour (175USD).

Have you had any lessons from him?  I wonder what actually justifies this exorbitant rate.  To put things in perspective, according to a survey by the Incorporated Society of Musicians, as at September 2010, the average charge out rate of a private piano teacher in central London with over 15 years of experience is £35, with a "central range" of £25 to £51.

I also know from recent personal enquiries with the Guildhall School of Music (August 2011) that there are piano professors there that are keen on teaching private sutdents (even amateurs), and they typically charge about £80 pounds an hour (which is not cheap of course, but at least justified by their professional experience).

Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

I recommend my current teacher, Thalia Myers. I chose her particularly because she plays a lot of contemporary music and that's what I want to play most, but as well as that she has absolutely transformed my technique and playing.

I also recommend Colin Stone, my previous teacher. He is a fantastic pianist and a really good teacher. I think quite a few well known pianists have studied with him.

Best of luck!

Haha - busted!

Saw a recommendation for Mark Gasser above - don't bother asking him if you want lessons in London as he moved to Australia 2 or 3 years ago now. Damn fine teacher and all that, just 12,000 miles away.

I've heard great things about Christine Croshaw - her discs are amazing and I added this video to youtube this week which I found on her facebook page:

She has clearly had an impressive performing career and teaches some of today's leading collaborative pianists. I guess 80/90£ is the going rate for this level of experienced teacher.
As you say, worth every penny!
