-30 mins Piano Concertos
on: October 21, 2009, 12:36:49 AM
Got an opportunity next spring to do a sub 30 min concerto,

so far ive got a couple of good choices:

Scriabin
Totentanz
Shosta 2
Mendelssohn 1
Franck Symphonic Variations
Poulenc

pretty keen on doing totentanz...

rather than comment on how bad you think some of the pieces in that list are, would anyone be kind enough to offer some more options? i have months before i have to decide. Thanks very much!

If you like Totentanz - I would suggest Liszts Piano Concerto No. 2 in A...

(Instead of No. 1 in E flat which has been played to death)...

THAT CONCERTO ROCKS!!! Plus it's only about 20 - 22 mins long.

Ravel Left Hand. Heehee

I think it's less than 20.
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

All the Bach concerti
All the Mozart concerti
I think all of the Beethoven
Weber (complete)
miscellaneous work by Schumann for piano and orchestra
Prokofiev 1 and 3
Ginastera concerto no.1

That is a shame as i was looking forward to commenting on how bad some of the pieces are.

It is good that you have months to decide, since to list concertos under 30 minutes would probably take a similar amount of time.

If i were you, I would just play the Totentanz.

Good luck

That would be one helluva fast Emperor performance you've got in mind....

rach 4--more over looked than 2 and 3 but still good; a fast performance is closer to 20 minutes.

That would have to be a bloody fast concerto... Rachmaninoff himself (who was known for incredibly fast playing of his piece) takes 25 mins to play the 4th Piano Concerto... Ashkenazy takes almost 27 mins and another recording I have is almost 31 mins...

20 mins??? NO WAY!!!

Shumann's Piano concerto thakes less than 30 minutes and it is really fun to play.
Greig's Piano concerto can be played in about 30 minutes.
Handel has some really nice piano concertos and they arent overplayed.
Rachmaninoffs 1st piano concerto is again under 30 minutes
Both af Mendelssohns are good choices, but I prefer the 2nd
Ravels piano concetos are also good.
From liszt you could play the Malediction
If you are really ambitious you could try Chopins Polonaise Brilliante. But It is heard so often that it is really easy to find mistakes in it. But it is still a brilliant piece
You could try Rachmaninoffs Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini.

Since I am Armenian i must also put in Khachaturian piano concerto, And the very difficult Heroic Ballade By Arno Babadjanian.

I am sure there are many other good pieces but that is all i can think of for now. :)

Good luck.   Ara

If you want something by an unsung hero, try a Hummel concerto or work for piano and orchestra. He has 18 works for piano and orchestra total, and 8 of those are piano concertos. The ones in A minor and B minor are very popular, yes, but he also has some other good ones, like his one in E major and his G major concertino (for something very short).

Indeed - and in any case it would have to be the revised version, since the original is somewhat longer.

Indeed, the version I am thinking of is Rachmaninoff's second revision and its duration is only about 23 minutes.

The composer is known to have preferred this to his original (though he was never completely happy with it).
