I teach  1/2 lessons from my home.  However, one student that lives down the street from me and is progressing quite well, she takes 45 minute lessons now.  And I have one student that lives a distant from me, takes 45 minute lessons every other week.

best wishes,

Ok! I find it almost impossible to teach a student less than 20 minutes. Ive been a teacher for more than 24 years now and my workload is getting bigger and bigger. For now I have 56 pupils!! And they still wants med to have more. Thats bad :(

It really depends. I go for an hour, tops, no more. It's all really up to the student, but as a mentor, I must do my part. Visit me here! https://onepianotutor.blogspot.com

i find 20 minutes ridiculous, thats like sitting down and warming up. For most children 30 minutes is best, they cant seem to sit/concentrate longer anyway. Talented kids and adults should get an hour, so you can properly handle all the pieces.

It really depends on what level the student is playing at.  For beginners to Grade 3, 30 minutes is the minimum.  From Grade 4-6 I recommend at least 45 minute lessons every week, and above Grade 7 you will need at least an hour.  In higher grades the student should also be doing either theory or musicianship, which will take up at least another 30 minutes, either added to the lesson, or taught separately.  This is assuming that there are no learning difficulty issues, in which case you need to allow more time for everything.  But 20 minutes is certainly not enough to keep a student moving forwards all the time unless you are working with very young beginners (no older than 6 years).

I take only adults (18+); and for them I give only 1 hour lessons. I do not accept kids. I did that in the late 1970s and they were impossible. Never practiced and expected that the lesson would suddenly have them playing a piece that they couldn't play before. So NO MORE KIDS. They expect "magic" - - - that ain't the way it works - - piano is a SKILL and you don't acquire a skill unless you PRACTICE!! Your teacher can not "TEACH " you how to play - - - - - he/she can only guide you in acquiring that skill.

So for a couple years I was teaching 30 min lessons in my home to mostly beginners. With the younger kids (4-6) this worked fine, but with the ones a little bit older, I was regularly spilling over into 40 min lessons, even though I tried hard get through all their pieces and preview the new ones within the regular time. Also, for the most part, the kids were enjoying their time with me, not pushing to get out of the lesson. I felt like, especially with the motivated ones, that extra time was needed and beneficial. But..... I wasn't getting paid for the extra time that inevitably came up each week. Since then, my studio size has doubled, and I've completely done away with the traditional 30 min lessons, going to 40 min. This has worked great with all my students and their parents, and I'm no longer working w/out getting paid.

For myself as an advanced student, where I live there aren't really any teachers high level teachers (like college level) for 75 miles around. So, I follow this plan to take lessons from my current teacher who lives about 1.5 hrs away. One lesson every two wks, but for 2-3 hrs long, and as competitions and performances come up, lessons every week for a month before the competition. This plan works great, and I suggest it if you have trouble finding a good teacher near you. In my case, my teacher is also a performer, so he practices during my scheduled time on the off-weeks for lessons.

My lesson lasts 1 hour. If theory is included then I learn 1.5 hours. During exam periods I get 2 hour lessons.

If a student is taking their lessons in a conservatory type setting where they come multiple days a week for theory instruction, sol-fege, ensemble playing, etc. then I could see 30 minute private lessons being acceptable for beginning level students.

For most of us who are trying to incorporate theory and musicianship skills into a once-a-week lesson, anything less than 45 minutes will probably feel rushed.

Having said that, most of my private lessons are 30 minutes. But, boy do I notice a difference with the students who move up to 45 minute lessons. I feel much more relaxed and the students gets so much more out of their weekly lesson.

1 hour should be the standard length of a pianolesson.

Ditto, an hour.  For weekly lessons.  Maybe longer for special things, recitals or meeting with a teacher once in a while.

Twenty minutes is barely enough time for a beginner.  Enough to maybe go through their pieces, but theory too?  No way.  Plus if they're a little late... It's not really a lesson then.

Theory should be about 15-30 minutes.
