This forum is near death.

I wouldn't go so far to say that.  It may be more accurate to state that detailed discussions on piano buying and technology are far more prevalent on pianoworld.com

Pianostreet is a great place for discussing repertoire, technique, performance, teaching and student concerns.  Plus it is has the audition room where one can get feedback on recordings.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Well then hopefully I can be of some help! My suggestion is that as you said, the Yamaha YDP 140 digital piano is suitable. It has a nice sound, weighed action, touch responsiveness and is very economical. Go in to a store, have a play and if you like it and feel comfortable playing it go for it. It is perfect for a beginner, and will last for years to come. Speaking in Australian dollars here, don't pay a cent over $1500, remember that in all music stores the price is not set, not matter what, always try to negotiate, take it from a piano salesman! Good luck, Michael

I always felt the Yamaha YDP140 was limited for the amount of money you spend on it. It only has six sounds. That is a lot of money for only six sounds. Plus the YDP140 has two speakers powered by 6 watts each.

The Casio AP45 has sixty sounds and four speakers powered by 2 x 20 watts.

You have to play them both and decide for yourself but when you are playing the Yamaha ask yourself "why am I paying so much and only getting six sounds".

It depends on your price range. If you check out my improvisations on the Improvisation board the piano i am using is a digital piano, and it sounds very realistic, it also feels not too far off on the fingers.

I have a yamaha clavinova clp230 or somthing like that and imho there amazing although quite expensive, it was about £2500 when i got it. i think you can pick on up for just over £1000 now.

You can get casio privias for about £3-400 second hand online or £500 new, and although there not really great there good on a budget and people who dont know much about pianos wont really tell the difference too much.

Youtube is good, type in digital piano review and you'll see and here some samples.

Hope this helps

IMO the most economically priced piano, which has a good piano sound and a really fantastic authentic feel to the keys, is the Kawai CN-22, goes for less than £1000 in the UK. It's quite a compact piano too, 400mm deep.
