I have not been impressed with Joyce Yang's playing.  She has technical ability but her playing seems, well, careful. Yuja Wang is obviously more flashy, more virtuosic (have you seen the Youtube of her Flight of the Bumblebee?). I think her playing also has more personality.

So, in response to the query, Yuja Wang.

I'll vote Joyce Yang. Less flash more substance. Yuja has an extremely high hot babe factor though.

Yuja Wang is by far better.
Not only does she have an unlimited technique, but also wonderful timing and interpretations.

Yuja x1000 any day at any time <3  :-*

She is currently one of my favourite pianists.
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

Technical ability, style, etc.....Yuja Wang is 1000X better than Joyce.
I really think that Yuja can be the best pianist alive for technical side. I just watched her concert in Chicago, she is like a machine...I cannot believe what I saw...how could a human be that precise. Lastly, Yuja is much more famous than Joyce.

I went to Joyce master class, she is a terrific human being though, excellent musician just not world class superstar.

I confess my ignorance.  I've never heard of either of them.   :(

In complete agreement. Both are substandard pianists in my opinion, however. I'd much quicker ask out Yuja Wang, though.

IMO they're both quite ugly

Just wondering, retrou, are there any pianist you don't think is substandard? You don't like yuja or joyce, and if I remember correctly, you don't like nobuyuki... are there any pianists (besides yourself) that you like?

I'm not umm... trying to offend you. I'm just curious. If there are pianists that you feel are not substandard, in what ways are they better than the three I mentioned above?

I'd pick yuja over joyce, I'm amazed at her pronounciation, knowing over 20 Chinese people who came to canada around 14, NONE of their pronounciations are this good.

You obviously haven't known me very long and/or haven't been around the forum very long. I speak highly of many pianists. Just because I don't like those three Asian pianists doesn't mean I don't like *any* pianist. Unfortunately, most pianists I really dislike happen to be Asian, which probably comes from the cultural upbringing, which i believe negatively influences their musical development. It isn't racism, but rather its a stereotype that really exists in much of that race. And it would take a lot more to offend me than that. My posts should show that I'm pretty thick-skinned.

All this vitriol against Asian pianists... do you not respect ANY Asian pianists? I can understand not liking the two mentioned in this thread, but if you don't like any, I would be willing to bet large sums of money that there IS a degree of discrimination in your judgments. You expect to hear a certain type of playing from Asian pianists, and so you do. I sometimes wonder if people would make the same judgments if the ethnicities of performers were concealed... I honestly doubt it ::) Oh well. Your loss!
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

@retrou: I never mentioned anything about being asian in my post, and I never tried to imply that you don't like any pianists. I was simply asking if you liked any, and if so, how they're different from these pianists. I don't know what kind of up bringing you're talking about, but certainly lang lang doesn't play typically?

@omar_roy:
My top two pianists are Li YunDi and Artur Rubinstein, so one of my most favorite pianists is not Asian. And then there's Cziffra, Argerich, Berman, Richter... Horowitz is okay to (if you don't listen to Rubinstein's interpretation before Horowitz's) and of course, we can't forget about Birba :)

So yes, there are a lot of non-asian pianists I like.

The stereotypical Asian upbringing I was referring to was the idea of super-strict parents keeping their kids at the piano for 10 hours a day from a young age. You know, that whole thing. I know for a fact that many Asian pianists in the musical world are victims of this, and I would think this is a reason why many of them are so similar in their playing styles, on the surface at least. Lang Lang is a bit of a rebel, and possibly an exception, but he still sucks.
