How to say "Good day, everyone!" in German?
on: December 03, 2009, 02:13:29 AM
Exactly and correctly.  I know it's guten Tag something.  But is it alles?

Guten Tag alle miteinander!

Yea, correct (having lived in Germany for 12 years). "Alles" means "everything" not "everybody", Bob.

Ok.  Thanks.  So this is absolutely correct -- normal, and grammaticall correct?

Guten Tag alle miteinander!

I also see these...
Guten Tag allerseits! (all sides)
Guten Tag allemann! (all man?)
Guten Tag jeder! (every?)
Guten Tag jedermann! (every man?)

Are those grammatically correct?  Or normal?

Guten Tag allerseits! is correct. Also
Guten Tag alle miteinander!
or

Guten Tag miteinander!

Nobody would say Guten Tag jeder or allemann or jedermann though, that sounds weird.

When I lived in Germany, I found it useful to mumble.  The listener would usually give you the benefit of the doubt, and often figure out what you meant to say.

On the other hand, to speak clearly and distinctly will prove you DON'T know any grammar, and they can be a little critical.

The worst mistake I made was to rehearse what I wanted to say in my mind, so that I could spit it out without stumbling.  Trouble is, if you do that your listener often assumes you know much more German than you really do.  The answer would come back like a machine gun, and I wouldn't catch any of it.

I was trying to remember how Germans themselves did it while I was there (I spent five years working in Germany, then returned to the US).

As near as I can recall, they used none of the phrases listed above.

If it was an informal gathering, they just said "Guten Tag."

If the event were bigger or more formal, normally it was "Guten Tag, meine Damen und Herren."

I don't think I heard any other variations.  But my memory is faulty, can't be sure.

Also correct. Both not suited for a larger formal gathering though. In that case it would be "Guten
Tag meine Damen und Herren", as timothy correctly mentioned.

Yes, this is correct. Also Guten Morgen, weg von meinem Klavier!  ;D

@littletune: we say Guten Tag allerseits, Guten Tag (alle) miteinander, Guten Tag die Herrschaften (a bit humoristic and/or ancient). In Switzerland its easier: Grüezi mitenenand.

"Guten Tag an alle" is not usual and anyway grammatically incorrect because the person you wish a good day (or anything else) to is in dative whereas "an" goes with accusative.

Yes we have many yummy things. The country is full of them 8)

Swiss German is quite different, many Germans don't understand it, especially those from Northern Germany. But Swiss people try to speak what they call "Schriftdeutsch" (written German) when they are talking to foreigners.

Schrift means writing and by extension secretary, but colloquially means slave or peon.

Unterschrift means "sign here," under my authority.  My job required me to sign a large number of documents where it said unterschrift.  Invariably I had to sign above the line, therefore I insisted on calling it ueberschrift, a bit of humor the Germans never appreciated.

One time I had so much difficulty expressing myself auf Deutsch that the store clerk lost patience and said, "please sir.  Just say it in English."

Swiss French is not that different from French French. Less than Swiss German from German German.

:) oh ok cool :)
well except on wikipedia it says Silvan Zingg was born in Lugano where they speak mostly Italian so why did pianowolfi say he was pretty bad at Italian then? :) and why hasnt he posted any boggie woogie recordings in audition room :) (and besides i saved his improvisation som,som on my computer and theres a name of the file and probably pianowolfi's name and its not silvan zingg :)  and besides i think i saw pianowolfi's picture in the pictures thread once and i dont think he looks like Silvan Zingg :) ) ... but well ok :) and i can sing Schnappi  ;D so maybe pianowolfi could play and i would sing :) i bet all the people on pianostreet would really love to hear that!!  ;D  :P  :)

Yes I know what you mean. But we don't use "Vertuschung" in this sense. " Vertuschung" means for instance: You have committed tax evasion. Now you're on the verge of being caught. You decide to fake (or destruct) every personal data that may incriminate you. That's a "Vertuschung".

Or: an important politician is involved in a case of corruption. He tries to cover-up (vertuschen) his steps by (for instance) destroying files, manipulating the press, doing even more bribary etc.
