Help with "slides" in Goldberg Variation no.8
on: January 01, 2010, 12:47:59 AM
Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to how to make these two "slides" smooth and fast with both hands.

Thanks

Do you mean the descending demisemiquaver notes at the end of each repeat?

Yes, they are at the end of each "half" for lack of a better term. I have only attempted the first one where the right hand takes more notes than the left. Part of what is difficult I think is that the two hands don't play the same amount of notes. But what I really need is the technique to make it glide

I use these fingers for the descending notes:

Right hand
54321321

And left hand
13123454 (I've always played it like this, even though it is weird)

These might be awkward for you, and you might find a more comfortable fingering, but hopefully it helps. The best thing to do is to find the fingers you want to play the glides with, practice the glides separately (until it is automatic) and then add the other notes later. And practice slowly of course, until you can play them evenly.

EDIT: Sorry, for clarity: 1 is the thumb.

Thanks! I am hoping it is just a matter of ingraining the movements! I do love this variation!
