A piece by Liszt
on: January 10, 2010, 03:37:34 PM
Since Liszt made such difference in piano technique, I would like some help with picking pieces..
I am not a big fan of his music, accually, so I don't want any typical Liszt. Like no Hungarian Rhapsodies or any too superficial works.

I plan to play his paganini-variations, but I'd like to have something that is his own work aswell.

Thx

...the b minor sonata? ;D You know, if you ever come across an artistic performance of it (rather rare - most people play so fast and bash it to death) it actually comes across as a beautiful, magnificent piece.

Anyway, how about the 2 Legends? I like no. 2 better than the first, but I think both are good pieces. Or how about something from the Years of Pilgrimage? Vallee d'Obermann (from bk. I) is one of my favourites by Liszt, and there's always Les Jeux d'eaux a la villa d'Este (from bk. III).

If you want to play more etudes, the 2 concert studies (Walderauschen and Gnomenreign) are actually quite good pieces. "Il Lamento" from the 3 concert studies is beautiful. From the Transcendental Etudes, I find nos. 9 (Ricordanza), 11 (Harmonies du soir), and 12 (Chasse Neige) musically satisfying.

...gee, I wonder if this helps :P are you thinking of putting it in a recital program, for a jury, or just to learn? How long do you want/need the piece to be? And what do you mean by "typical Liszt"? Because you know, Hungarian Rhapsody no. 12 is actually a good piece - it has some artistic merits, unlike say nos. 2 and 6.

btw I'm working through the Paganini Etudes as well, and I'm not sure if I could ever have the stamina to perform them as a whole...huge kudos to you if you can!

And don't be like "What have you played before?" Just give me suggestions, and I'll check myself if I can handle them.

I'm just thinking about learning some Liszt, because one should play Liszt. But I don't know, I probably put them in a concert program sooner or later. And I don't have any time limit. I'm not even sure if I play more than the etudes.

Yes, it helped :P

It's more about Liszting repertoar. because I don't really know any pieces by him, only the most famous ones.

What is wrong with pieces being 'fun', like the second hungarian Rhapsody? I think thats actually more typically liszt ;)

Something from Annees de Pelerinages.

I'm doing Vallee d'Obermann now, and it is VERY different from the other liszt I've played (un sospiro, liebestraum #3, gnomenreigen).
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Hungarian Rhapsodies - superficial :o?????????

Ah well Liszt's Fantasy on Pagannis La Clochette S420 will keep you busy for the next 10 years. When that one's done, I'll find you another ::) :P
