Most Profound Rachmaninov?
on: January 21, 2010, 09:13:51 PM
Hey,

Ive loved Rachmaninoff for a while, but havent had the time to really work on any of his pieces. I like his first sonata a lot, but Im in high school and I dont have time for a 60 page piece. I want to play something very deep by him, very profound (this seems to be assigned more to his concerti) and more of a full piece like the sonata. Any suggestions?

And by profound i mean the depth shown in, for example, the 3rd concerto as the two melodies go back and forth fighting... Is there any piano piece that is similar? That dramatic?

The Corelli Variations is his masterpiece, in my opinion. The "return" of the theme in the middle of the work (variation XIV in D-flat) is an absolutely brilliant moment... and so solacing.

I just dont find that the corelli variations have the climaxs of other rachmaninov pieces such as the concerti.

What about his etudes? Some of Chopins etudes are incredibly beautiful, im working on the op 25 no 12 which is incredible.

The moment musicals op.16 are worth having a look at. The 3 nocturnes op. posth are very good and highly underplayed.
