A 'forsaken' thread. Here Goes: possible repertoire
on: February 04, 2010, 07:59:21 AM
Juries are coming up in a few months at school, and I'm trying to think of stuff to play next year already
. I'd obviously have to run it by my teacher, but here are a few things I've thought of from different time periods. I want this thread to turn into an open discussion about the pieces I list (and possible alternatives too!)
Baroque: Bach C#+ Prelude and Fugue or Eb minor Prelude and Fugue (Both BK1)
Classical Sonata: Schubert D.784 A minor; Beethoven Op 78 F#+; Beethoven Op 2#3 C major
Romantic: Chopin Barcarolle; Chopin Scherzo C# minor; Liszt Etude 'Visions' or 'Eroica'
Early 20th: Dohnanyi Rhapsody in C major; Ravel 'Barque sur l'Ocean'; Debussy 'Estampes'
20th Century: Louie 'I leap through the sky with stars'; Liebermann - Some Nocturnes or several of Gargoyles
Here's what I did this year (or am currently preparing for juries):
-Bach P/F Bb minor Bk1
-Beethoven Sonata Op 10 #1
-Liszt 'Vallee d'Obermann'
-Chopin Nocturne Op 48#1
-Debussy Preludes Bk1 #1,3,5
-Prokofiev Sonata #3
Hmmm... I've tried to find a few things from each time period that I would really like to learn (over a year). I'm thinking if I decide to pick a larger scale Baroque (a suite possibly), then I'd take a shorter 20th century, or if I do something like the Estampes, then maybe no modern/contemporary work. I really want to have a clear idea of what I'd play next year by around mid June, so that I can start looking through some of the stuff a bit over the summer.
I don't want to start bombarding my teacher with questions about stuff next year, because he's preparing a bunch of Masters students for their recitals and other stuff, so I'll wait 'till after exam period is done... but I can still ask forum people for opinions/insight on some of this stuff! I'm trying to stay away from the Chopin Ballades (3 people played the same one this year), Debussy Preludes (did a bunch this year), and anything too bombastic from 20th Century.
Sorry again for whoever hates these threads, but they're sort of a guilty pleasure; I'd love to see what people have to say about these, what would go well with what, what to stay away from etc.

i will offer you a much different list for no good reason:
bach partita (d major or e minor) or for something shorter a toccata like c minor or f sharp minor
beethoven op. 78 is great but consider the eroica variations
chopin f sharp major impromptu #2
scriabin sonata #7 or #8 (both incredible, and very challenging)
20th century:
jacques hetu variations!

Oooooh. I really like the Hetu!
Thanks for these; I heard someone playing the Eroica variations a few months ago, and I really liked those. I guess I'm too grounded on the 'standard' of preludes and fugues and sonatas. I'll keep my eyes open. The Scriabin might be a bit too intense, although I do love those sonatas.
