Please advise re Lipp upright
on: February 07, 2010, 11:32:37 AM
Hi
I have a Rich Lipp upright - a tuner has damaged by overtightening and it is splitting - do I restore or sell and get something else? Felts and dampers appear ok - tone is lovely - not sure of age as I don't know where to locate serial no.
Any information would be gratefully accepted. Thanks

Not sure what all the parts are called - the board with the pegs on it for tightening the strings is all splitting - when I had it tuned, the tuner told me it was from a previous tuner over tightening it.

That's called the wrest plank. But the pins can only be over-tightened by removing the strings and driving them a few turns further into the plank, which is pretty unlikely. Otherwise, in normal use, their tightness is determined by the tuning of the piano. So I don't really see the point of the comment. If a wrest plank is splitting it's usually due to dryness or other environmental problem.
Unfortunately this is really rather hard to fix. Ideally you have the wrest plank replaced but that's _major_ surgery, and any other type of 'repair' is a bodge which may or may not work long term.

The splitting is as mentioned due to dryness/age/intial quality.
I think if your tech blamed another tech for this condition, he's not much of a tech. Find another.
