To what standard? Hamelin said he endured a far greater challenge with the Rachmaninov 2nd piano concerto than Godowsky's (hellish) piano sonata, for instance.

Yeah, Rach 2 is really annoyingly difficult to play really well...and that 3rd movt! Sounds so easy in the recordings until you actually get to see the score and play it...><

Anyway, this is my list for this year

I hope I can actually 'complete' a piece, instead of learning all (or some of) the notes and casting it aside. I guess the fact that I don't have to perform anything really hinders my commitment to finish a piece.

I'm in that same boat, but hope to overcome my issue of not finishing works.

This year I would like to finish -

Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturne in Db, Winter Wind Etude, Minute Waltz, Rachmaninov's Preludes G minor and C# minor, Brahms Prelude in G minor...and that's all for now. I have started all of these in the past but have not finished them, so again, we shall see.

I also have a hard-on for Chopin's Heroic Polonaise and Ballade I, but will only begin to work on those.

Nice program. You know, I never quite understand why people call that Schubert the "little" A major sonata...sure, there's a 4-movement one in A major, but sheesh that D664 is extremely difficult - that 3rd movt. is killer!

Prongated, I like your view of things Also I found what you said about the difficulty of "Suite Bergamasque" very true. I love this suite, but when I had to relearn it in a short time for an exam I experienced that it's definitely no walk in the park

More pieces I'd like to learn! Hmm: I need some Liszt, but I'm not sure which piece. Ditto with Rachmaninoff. I've never played music by either of those composers. I may learn one of Rachy's Moments Musicaux and one of Liszt's pieces from Years of Pilgrimage.

Oh, and I'm adding the Alkan Symphony for piano to my list (Op. 39 Nos. 4-7). I'm not sure about the fourth movement yet, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. The first movement is my favorite; SO menacing, dark, and haunting; I love it!

Ugh, tell me about it! The 3rd movement is going to eat me alive... I'm beginning to wonder if this sonata was the wisest choice. I love playing Schubert, but (I think) this sonata may me among the most difficult on the syllabus and a bit of a stretch just 6 months after Grade 8...

And some Ravel or Debussy.. My teacher has been nagging about Valse Noble e sentimentale, so I guess I'll play that one.
I'll try to finish Schumann Symphonic etudes, with the apendix.

But hopefully I'll be accepted at Utrecht Music academy, and start working with Alan Weiss. Maybe he has got totaly different plans for me..

Try Opus 32 no 4. That's a really powerful piece. I think you will learn an enormous amount from number 2 as well. I don't hear number 8 performed often, so it might be worth giving that a crack.

FYI I am close to my 1st "concert standard" recording for this forum. I realise I have served up comparative "rubbish" to this point. You should hear a well balanced performance of Rachmaninov's Prelude in Bb Minor Op32 no2 very soon.
