Lynyrd Skynyrd's instrument
on: February 21, 2010, 04:34:40 AM
I heard Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert on Soundstage on PBS this week (Feb 10).  There was great piano playing by new pianist Peter "Keys" Pisacryk.  It is interesting he is using two hands to do the signature treble piano sound.  The LS band always had a prominent piano line, I reviewed the vinyl LP version with Billy Powell after the show.  The sound is similar but more impressive with 120 watts behind it on real Peavey speakers.  Peter Keys on the HD show was playing a console or short studio piano, no name visible. The sound was very admirable.   I never saw a video of the original players but the piano sounds on the record are good.    Does anybody know what instrument they were playing, then and now?  Does anybody know what microphone was used?  I have played some pretty good pianos, but I've never been privileged to see a mike in use that could do a piano properly.  The high school I attended made recordings of band, orchestra, and piano on 1/2 tape with a big Ampex unit; the piano results were poor.  My current church is miking the piano and running it through the PA speakers, the results are horrible.
