Bax Sonata in E flat
on: March 02, 2010, 09:47:03 PM
I am looking for a score. or a scan, or anything that would allow a look at the Piano Sonata in E flat of Arnold Bax, this being the original version of the 1st symphony. Much thanks.  8)

Those are not the correct works, anyways, for the Sonata in E flat is not numbered and I have not seen it on the internet. Also, hasn't Bax cleared copyright because it has been more than 50 years since his death? I would think it would be ok.

50 years applies in Canada but not many other countries - 70 in all of Europe, even longer in some. According to something I read recently on the ever-intriguing Wikipedia, there is no copyright law in Afghanistan, so if you set yourself up with a photocopier and a piano there you can copy and learn all the music you like - they can't confiscate it from your brain when you enter another country!

Wow, I didn't realized this request had gotten attention.

Finding the score is the thing...I'm not looking for a gimme. I just would like to know were I can find it!  :)

I'm not even sure it's published. The Wikipedia article about it is written by Lewis Foreman, who would certainly be the person to contact for information as he's a walking encyclopedia of 20th-century British music.

Michael Endres has played and recorded it. Perhaps you could try to get in touch with him to see where he got it. You could also try looking here:

A copy of the manuscript can be ordered via the British Library where Bax's papers are held.

It also appears that McCabe has done some work on this piece and indeed recorded it.
