Hi, I found it a bit confusing too, so I made a scheme for myself with the most important chords and how you can construct them yourself. I made it into a pdf for you and attached it. It also has some other tips in it that I had in the document.
Hope this helps you a bit :-)

silent_sea,

Yes, you can learn piano by yourself. There are people who are really gifted; their talent in playing piano is innate. But for those who are not that lucky to have such talent, you can still get piano lessons at home and studio piano lessons. You can also take online piano lessons

You determine the key signature of the song and use the chords in that key. A scale in chords goes major-minor-minor-major-major-minor-diminished-major.

So if the song is in the key of C major, the basic triads (three-note chords) used in the song will be: Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim, (C major). Four finger chords add an extra note to make variations like Aminor7, Fmajor7 etc.

I suggest you just buy or download a chord chard with chords for all the key signatures. Then experiment with adding chords to a melody.

Hey - your next step would be learning 7th chords - try https://www.harmonyexpert.com - this has some nice articles of how to build up your chords on piano and voice them properly.  Hope this helps.

If you have an iPhone or iTouch, there's a rather nifty application called Pianochords that shows you all the chords on a virtual keyboard.  i think it would be a great tool to "quiz" yourself and get to know them.
Currently learning:
Chopin Prelude Op. 28, no. 15
Schubert Sonata in A Major, D.959: Allegretto
