Rachmaninoff Prelude in C# Minor Op. 3 No. 2 - Practice Techniques.
on: March 07, 2010, 06:57:08 PM
Hi,
I've chosen to practice this piece for the coming couple of months after listening to the many interpretations. I absolutely love it and it's a bit out of my league but that's why I'm posting this. I need advice on how to practice each part of the piece. Any tips are appreciated but the more specific you are, the better. Thank you very much in advance!
Name of Piece: Prelude in C# minor Op. 3 No. 2 - Morceaux de Fantaisie
Composer: Sergei V. Rachmaninoff

(This is my favourite interpretation that I could find online so it gives you an idea of what I'm going for)

It's a fair rendition for an amateur pianist. There's problems with some of the note values not being held long enough, not to mention some wrong notes and problems with rhythm in sections, but it is listenable.
You should have a listen to British pianist Peter Donohoe's recording of this piece. It's brilliant and my favourite.

I'm a big fan of Van Cliburn's when it comes to this piece as well, you may want to check out his rendition of it.

Practise very slowly the Agitato section; this section gives me much grief. Work on highlight the melody in the first section, too. I would listen to Ashkenazy's and Rachmaninoff's performances.
