Favorite Beethoven Sonata!
on: July 08, 2004, 08:54:16 AM
Well, since theres a Mozart one.. I'll start a Beethoven one.. if there is already a Beethoven one.. then i apologize.
Mine:
1. op. 53 "Waldstein" (im a little biased considering this is the one im playing)
2. op. 109
3. op. 57 "Appassionata"
4. op. 106 "Hammerklavier"
5. op. 81a " Les Adieux"
6. Op. 110 + 111 (tied)

Sorry to ruin your fun, but...

You should also look into his earlier sonatas. There's some great beauty there too.

There are of course several ones that I like, but I would like to especially recommend the 1st one in f minor!
This sonata really rocks and grooves. An early masterpiece.
Best Wishes,

I love nearly every one... But my favorites are...
Appassionata
Waldstein
and the last four... they are all true triumphs of piano literature...
Beethoven's sonatas are unmatched by any other composer in they're depth and beauty. The other thing I like about Beethoven is how you can really see his development like others have said...

Hammerklavier, op. 110, op. 111, op. 101, op. 109, Waldstein, Appasionata, Les Adeiux (which I play now), op. 31 #3, Tempest, op. 2 #1 (one of the best early ones), Pathetique, op. 7 (E-flat), op. 26 (A-flat), op. 10#1, op. 78, op. 54. Also the op. 90. And op. 2 #2 and #3, op. 79 as well. Op. 27 #1, and #2 is Moonlight, and op. 10 #3, and #2. Might as well also mention op. 28 and op. 14 #1&2. And op. 22 and op. 10 #2, and op. 49 #1.

All of them! At the moment though my favourites are the first movements of Op. 90 and Op 101, that I’m learning, not particularly hard to play but I just love them and had to learn them. They’re also the type of pieces that I initially thought were OK and then suddenly, click, one day they’re the most important pieces of music ever written!
I remember going to a series of recitals a couple of years ago which included all the sonatas and one of the pianist waffled on about how Beethoven’s later Sonatas were very introspective pieces. I remembered thinking what a load of analytical claptrap, but now I see exactly what he meant.
