Finale Formatting Question
on: April 09, 2010, 02:34:54 PM
So I'm working on a project in Finale for my orchestration class.  I've optimized the staffs (for those who dont use finale, that means that when staffs are empty for a whole page, you can delete them to allow for more space on the page).  But now it seems like there is a bit too much space.  Does anyone know any formatting techniques I can use to make the finished product look a little more professional and consise? Instead of having these big white spaces whenever I've deleted a superfluous staff?

Edit:
I have some BASIC knowledge of finale, and I know how to use stuff like "vertical collision remover," the resize tool, and how to hand position optimized staffs.  What I'm interested in is which of these techniques (or a combination of those, or one that I haven't even tried yet) produces the most PROFESSIONAL looking result?  The kind that you'd find in a published score.  (since part of the project grade includes the look of the end result as well as the actual orchestration)
Pieces:
Beethoven - Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31 No. 2
Chopin - Nocturne in Bb minor Op. 9 No. 1
Debussy - "La Danse De Puck"
Somers - Sonnet No. 3, "Primeval"
Gershwin - Concerto in F

Hi Mitchell
I understand this is no help for you right now, but anyway since no-one seems to reply, speaking long-term I think you're better off with Sibelius...  :-\
Finale is the oldest notation-software of the two, and Should be the best, but they've held on to their original groundwork which is too graphical only, I believe. So these kind of problems are typical for Finale and easier to maneuvre through Sibelius.

Since I once switched and haven't returned I can't give any other suggestions, I don't remember. But you seem to have found the solution? I'm afraid it doesn't get any easier than one of those methods...
But someone else would know better

regards
chris

I haven't used either for awhile.  I know there are forums for those though.

Thanks for the replies!

Finale is used by the college, however.  And I am using their software.

The theory prof might know.  They get into that a lot sometimes.
