Condoleeza Rice.

After hearing her playing, I just call her a politician and nothing more.

All you have to do is think about how you want to play, relax, and then play -- oh (!), and listen while you play.  Always listen !

I play with cotton wool in my ears so I don't have to hear it.

haha  ... Thal.  That reminds me of a time once when I actually DID put earplugs into my ears, and then a set of those sound-dampening earphones over that, turned out the lights in my practice room and tried practicing like that.  I had a theory, and you know how us theorists are, we all have *very* serious science labs and run our experimental theories accordingly.  Unfortunately, a friend walked in on me ... haha.

Really though, my current "theory" is that any pianistic/musical question can essentially be answered with the text in my post above.

*off to the lab ...*

Oh, I like to experiment as well.

I had read that when people are denied one "sense", the others increase to compensate.

Regretfully, as I could not hear, there was no way for me to find out if this was the case.

Thal

glenn gould once remarked that the only way he could master certain truly difficult passages was to play while completely isolated from the sounds he was making, by using headphones blasting noise at a sufficiently high volume.  perhaps you're just mimicking the methods of the masters?
