List of solo piano pieces with parallel orchestral pieces?
on: April 16, 2010, 03:26:05 AM
Mussorgky, Pictures -- It's for piano and for orchestra.
What other works are like that? I'm thining the major ones -- Ravel, Liszt, etc. but if there are smaller composers I wouldn't mind hearing about them too.
I'm looking for pieces that are for solo piano (either originally or transcribed) that also have a full orchestra version. I want to compare how the piece is on piano with how it is for orchestra -- how it ideas are translated between solo piano and orchestra.
Piano arranging/transcription essentially.

There are squillions old chap.
Most famous ones I guess would be the Liszt/Beethoven symphonies.
I think all of the Mozart symphonies and at least half of the Haydn exist in piano solo versions.
God know how much chamber music has beed transcribed for solo piano. There must be hundreds.

An interesting one to look at might be Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 1, which was arranged for orchestra by Schoenberg. It is perhaps one of the best examples I can think of. Also, Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, which was partially transcribed for orchestra from the original piano version by the composer. Also, some of Debussy's preludes were transcribed for orchestra by Colin Matthews, and some of his etudes were transcribed for orchestra by Michael Jarrell. The latter two examples are perhaps most interesting from an orchestral perspective, given how much orchestration techniques have changed over the years.

just about every well-known orchestral piece has at least one piano reduction out there, although the majority were done by someone other than the composer. a few minutes on imslp should be illustrative of this point.
there aren't as many that were done by the composer. beethoven turned the sonata op 14 #1 into a string quartet:
https://imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/a/a2/IMSLP50976-PMLP106126-Op.14a.pdf
stravinsky reduced petrushka into 3 movements for piano, and ravel reduced bolero for the piano.
there's various arrangements of well-known piano pieces such as chopin op 9 #2 or debussy claire de lune for various other instruments, but again, most of these are not by the original composer.
someone should orchestrate the alkan symphony for solo piano into the alkan symphony.

Yeah, I'm thinking of the heavy-hitters for this. Someone who knows what they're doing with reductions and orchestration. Ravel came to mind first.
Are there any study scores like this? I've seen one that has the piano part right below the orchestral material so it's easier to compare.

And is there a term for that type of relationship? Parallel works?

I don't think there is a term, for it isn't really a significant relationship in most cases, I wouldn't say. Also, the "heavy-hitters" aren't the only people that should be considered, for there are many composers who are very good at orchestration who aren't as well known or are more recent. Also, as was mentioned, the composers rarely did reductions (or orchestrations) of their original works.

Most of Liszt transcriptions are good.
