How to analyze the character of pieces?

I've been playing piano for years... but i still can't analyze Bach's character of some of his pieces by myself.. :-[
Please som1 tell me how....... :-\

Emotional/expressive character?  Music doesn't always have to have that.

Divide it into sections and say how each sounds to you? 

By rhythm -- As in if it's a dance piece or section.

major/minor

How the melody sounds -- final, finished?

Texture -- number of independent lines moving along at once -- which could sound simple if it's a melody with chords or complicated if it's 4 independent voices moving along.

How melodic the melody is, if there is a melody... if there are little motives...

Anyone have an example of such an analysis? I'm sceptical because character is a vague term.
