my 1st grade exam pieces
on: April 30, 2010, 08:15:57 PM
Well... I know people are not really interested in hearing me play my 1st grade pieces  :-\ but I thought I would post anyway...  :-\ because I would really like too...  :-[
These are 4 pieces that I will be playing for my 1st grade exam (if I will be allowed  :( ).
First one is Wiegenlied (it's from a German book) -I think that's Lullaby in English- by Isidore Philipp.
Second one is Slovenian folk tune (if that's the right way to say it)  - Pleši, pleši črni kos (which is: Dance, dance black blackbird in English :) )
Third one doesn't really have a title  :-\ (it's just number 83 :) ) and my teacher said it was an etude and I call it Allegro (because it says that in the beginning :) ) and it's by I. Berkovič.
And the fourth one is Indijanski bojni ples, which means something like Indian war dance and it's by M. Aaron.
Well if someone would maybe hear that I'm making some really bad mistakes or something it would be great if they could tell me, but otherwise I know there's probably not that much to comment about 1st grade pieces anyway :) ... if anyone will even listen :)
(Oh and I know i'm probably still not playing light enough and it still sounds kinda to heavy  :-\ )

I would also like to post my second grade exam pieces later (when I learn them better) because I'm supposed to do 1st and 2nd grade exams at the same time  :-\ (in june) ...and  those are a lot harder (i mean for me) :)

Okay - quickly...

Wiegenlied - I didn't hear a single dynamic change throughout the piece, and I'm not sure what dynamic marking it is - although it sounded like forte (although that could be the recording device that limits the dynamics range)
Slovenian Folk Tune - seemed alright to me.
Etude Allegro - if the title is allegro, then I think you might need to play it a little faster as it didn't seem to sound as if it had a 'fast and lively' feel to me.
Indijanski - Love the 1st beat accent... gives it a bit of drive. Again - it sounds a little slow... Instead of an Indian War dance, it sorta sounds like an Indian tiffle dance.

Having said that - I've never seen the pieces, but trying to go on the description you've given.

The notes seem to be right, and fluent which is what the examiners look for primary in a first grade exam. Just MAKE SURE you know every single sign and term on your pieces as well.

Thank you very much for your comments!! :)
Well that Wiegenlied is supposed to be piano  ;D . Well most of the time... (in the middle part when the melody goes up the first time it should be mf and the second time mp)... and I really thought I was playing it like that  :-[ :) I guess I imagined it that way in my head :) because when I listened to it again I heard that it just sounds really loud all the time  :o  :) But maybe it's so loud also because I put my camera on my piano while i'm recording  :-\ .
And those two pieces I think they should be a little faster but my fingers don't wanna work so fast yet :) If I play too fast then I don't play everything right anymore (my fingers start playing some wrong notes and wrong rhythm). So I rather play slower. But I have one month to practice so maybe my fingers will get used to playing faster and right :)

I will post Wiegenlied one more time because the first one sounds really wrong... (i really tried playing it right this time and i didn't put the camera on the piano).

Thank you perfect_pitch for commenting even though they're just first grade pieces... :)

Hey little tune...

I'm just glad to help... even I remember doing my Grade 1 pieces in the day... (although that takes me back to my childhood.... ahhhh).  ;)

One good technique I use to get my pieces faster is to just incrementally increase the speed week by week. Say for instance you're playing the Allegro at 100 beats a minute, what I would do is next week practice it at say 4 beats faster, then 4 beats faster the week after.

And in a month you've just increase 16 beats a minute without putting any real strain on your fingers. Don't try and speed them up like NOW... take it in steps.

I recognize the last one!  It's called 'rock song' in the Michael Aaron book that I have haha.  I really like the accentuation - you didn't miss a detail!

Any faster would probably make it too abrupt.  Especially for a level 1 exam, it would be a bit too hectic sounding.  I'm used to hearing it slightly slower (but I have never heard a recording, it was just based on my idea of it  ;))
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Thanks for your comment!!  :) That last one I think is really cool  8) It's really fun playing it!  :) I guess I still have to decide how fast I will play it :)
