Chopin Preludes edited by Debussy now at IMSLP
on: May 04, 2010, 02:57:44 AM
Someone uploaded Debussy's edition of Chopin's Preludes (originally published by Durand) to IMSLP today.  I haven't examined it too closely yet, but the engraving is very spacious and easy on the eyes.

I noticed this curious footnote to Op. 28 No. 14:  "Sur l'édition originale, Chopin a rayé le mot Allegro et l'a remplacé par Largo."  ("On the original edition, Chopin crossed out the word Allegro and replaced it with Largo.")  I wonder which edition Debussy refers to, and what the circumstances were of Chopin making such an amendment by hand.

Thanks for the notice.  Unfortunately, I don't really find anything special about this edition.  This was clearly done after the age where musicians felt it appropriate to input their opinions into other people's music - which I lament.  I wish we had Debussy's opinion on how to play Chopin preludes; but rest assured this edition does not provide us with that.

About the crossed out tempo marking, perhaps the composer's intention was to start largo, then stop and start all over again allegro?
