Best books to self-teach piano?
on: May 13, 2010, 02:29:11 AM
Hello, I'm looking for some books that can help me teach myself how to play with proper techniques since I don't have the access to a piano teacher.

I'm still a beginner.  I can play some simple songs like Russian Folk Song and some other level 1 songs.

I know that I wouldn't be making a great prograss without a teacher, but following a good book is better than blind practice.

Thanks,
KF.

Not so sure it is.  I had a whole set of Matthay books (you can download them at www.archive.org).  Until I found an ex- Matthay student they meant nothing.  If you're going ahead study posture (not piano) till your brain hurts and remember - muscles only contract so how the hell you gonna get that key depressed?.

I used Alfred's Adult Beginner.  I made enough progress that when I found a teacher she started me in book 3 of the series she used.  YMMV.
