New and want your pinion
on: May 26, 2010, 06:55:23 AM
hi everyone
i've been playing the keyboards for 5 years now but only for fun with my band and stuff like that
and all i have learned was self taught
lately i started to want to get into piano more and to study it properly but one problem is sight reading
it takes me about an hour to finish reading few measures so iwas thinking of a way to help me improve this
i thought about printing some law level sheets and write the names of the note on them while am not on the keyboard to improve my self on knowing what note is what
and when i get to practice i try to play another sheet music to see how much i progressed in knowing what notes are the one written
just wanted to know your opinion in that and if there is a better way
tahnx in advance

I don't know if there's a better way, but it only seems logical to me that the basis for sight reading is to knowing what the notes are when you see them.    I know some people use flashcards to help them learn too.

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, there are sight reading training apps too.  I'm an interactive learner... I have to be engaged in an activity to really learn something.  Just studying it off a sheet of paper does me no good at all, so I like these sort of game things to help me learn.
Currently learning:
Chopin Prelude Op. 28, no. 15
Schubert Sonata in A Major, D.959: Allegretto

That iPhone app thing sounds amazing!

They way I learned to read musical notation was probably the hard way, ie just keep at it until it gets into your head. Maybe do a few bars a day, and test yourself? Make it part of your practice.

It's like riding a bicycle.

ya the Ipod idea is really good i think i'll go with that beside the idea of having the sheet on my hand just to get used to it and to try and memorize some songs that way
thanx for the replay :)

To write the names of the notes is absolutely a no-no. One must associate the note in the sheetmusic to its position in the keyboard and to its name.
