Buying a used piano. Works or not?

I am really new. Just wondering if have one of the floor foot things, pump whatever. Broken does the piano still function. Thanks.

It depends. Most of the action is independent of the pedals. Its all leverage. The pedal pushes a dowel (wooden rod) which pushes a lever connected to the dampers and lifts them away giving you a sustain. You will not get a sustaining note if they are not connected.
If you really know nothing at all about pianos, you should find somebody that does. You may be paying for a pretty piece of junk.
Don't go it alone. You'll may get burned.
