Anywhere from free to half a million dollars. You pick the number you like, or can afford, and then go and look at instruments in that range.
Not sure exactly where you are located, but here in Vancouver Canada, a decent (entry level) new upright is 3-5K and a decent (entry level) new grand is anywhere from 7-12K.
Of course there is the used market everywhere, but in order to determine which ones are the good ones, you would have to hire a technician to check them out. In the used market though, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a good one.....
Happy hunting....

If you think it's is expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.

If its from 1850, it is really only a piece of furniture. If you want a piano to play AVOID

For any instruments you come across in your search, have them checked by a technician of your choice. This person will tell you through experience which would be a good purchase.
Buy the tone you like to hear.
