Boston 118S vs. Yamaha or Kawai
on: July 14, 2010, 02:55:46 PM
I want to purchase a piano.  I am torn between Boston 118S vs. Yamaha.  Would you please advice if the cost is equivalent on both of them, which one I should go with?  Also, some people advice me to purchase a Kawai???

What sound do you like?

The model numbers matter too, as the Yamaha C or Kawai RX are far better than the lesser priced models.

What do you like about Boston? The big fat bass perhaps?  If so examine the Tenor and Soprano range for singability.  A lot of the times I've found these parts of the piano rather underwhelming.

Do you like the colorfulness of Kawai's tone?  or perhaps the clarity of Yamaha?

If you are attracted to these pianos by brand name alone, I suggest you keep looking around.  Make note of properties of a piano you are attracted to rather than name or prestige, and look for them in any brand you may be considering.

What would you like to hear, touch, feel and experience in a piano that you own?  What music do you play?

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Theyre all good piano's, you'll have to decide yourself if the money is worth the tone you like.
Btw, arent Bostons made by Kawai? ;)

I would strongly advise the Kawai. In my (very wide) experience they seem to be the best made of the three. Exactly what they sound and feel like is a bit variable (any piano make/model) and can be adjusted by a technician. What really matters when you buy one new is how well it will hold up over a year or five.

Yes, Kawai makes Boston but the design isn't Kawai's and the quality control seems not to be either, as far as I can judge from the number of year-old Bostons I've had to fix.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

Thanks for all your feedback.  I think I like the sound of Boston because it was rounded and bass sound.  Yes, it is made by Kawai, but the wood and other materials are from Steinway. Like you said, I don't want to buy it just for the brand name.  Everyone recommended yamaha and kawai, and I just couldn't make up my mind of what I want.  Do you know the resale value of Boston?

Nothing on a Boston is made by Steinway. It is designed by Steinway for a typical homeowners price. Its a decent piano at a decent price. Just because Steinway is the company that cheapened it down, doesn't make it better than a Kawai. Built by Kawai. I'd rather have a Kawai RX or a Yamaha C series myself.
