Difficult Chopin / Classical piece Suggestions?
on: July 17, 2010, 08:48:28 PM
I have nearly completed the Scherzo no 2 and i will perform it in two competitions, but I'm looking for a new piece to work on.
It doesn't necessarily have to be Chopin, I like other composers like Liszt as well.
I need suggestions  :)

Liszt's Vallee d'Obermann from Years of Pilgrimage, Suisse.  It's hauntingly eerie.

I listened to it and I enjoyed it but it's a bit long for my taste.
Thanks though!

Well, how about a bit more information to go on then?  Without any specific knowledge of your requirements or preferences as to length and type of piece (i.e., mood, character, etc.), the field of possible choices among difficult works by all composers is practically limitless.
What passes you ain't for you.

@ stevebob
i pretty much enjoy anything.  but i want a more complex piece because i will most likely be playing it in a competition.  i prefer it to be under 15 minutes

Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies? Or maybe a longer Beethoven piano sonata movement.

It doesn't matter.  it can be anywhere from 2 minutes to 15 minutes.

Well, I realy like the Les Adiuex III mvt. Sonata no. 26 by Beethoven. By Liszt, I would recommend his third grand etude, "La Campanella."

Here is some stuff

Second movement of Scriabins second sonata is DEFINITELY virtuosic (Left hand at 1:08 OM NOM NOM)

How difficult is it allowed to be? Here is his fifth sonata:

Or maybe Debussy?

This Liszt piece difficult enough? Considering the modest beginnings and the Mozart part.

Hello, if you are into Chopin hard pieces, i would advise you maybe to play:
1. Fantasia op. 49
2. Ballade no. 4 op. 52
3. Allegro De Concert op. 46

these are from Chopin bigger output and are hard to master, but are beautiful.
I have an enormous craving for Chopin's music, which is unusual for most normal and not normal people out there.

I like shaulhader's suggestions, especially the F Minor Ballade. If you want something a bit shorter maybe try Schumann's Abegg Variations.

ah.. interesting post! chopin and liszt (along with beethoven) are my favourite! :D

i'll see 15 minutes as your preferable choice. difficult works, lets zoom into sonatas then! chopin and liszt's sonatas are all headaches. (apart from chopin's first i'll say) but chopin's sonatas are too long for your case... sigh. if you want to look into them, sure!

piano sonata (liszt) is way too long, approx 30 minutes. but the other sonata by liszt, the dante sonata (Apres une Lecture de Dante, Fantasia Quasi sonata) is around 15 minutes long! (but people play around there, some 14 minutes in blazing speed, others 18 minutes, while i take around 16 - 17 minutes.) it is among the hardest pieces in standard repetoire.

now big challenge. do you want to try the tannhauser overture transcription by liszt? (liszt's transcriptions, are horrendously difficult.) its really beautiful piece... good to the human ears, good to torture your fingers too! thats as much as i can think of now, so all the best!
i'll say look into liszt's transcriptions.

You should listen to Liszt's Infernal Waltz and see if it tickles your fancy. It's also known as Reminiscences de Robert Le Diable but I prefer to call it The Infernal Waltz because that just sounds awesome.

Other than that I'd say:
Alkan: Le Festin d'Esope
Alkan: L'incendie au village voisin
Medtner: Tale Op.8 No.2
Prokofiev: La Suggestion Diabolique
Prokofiev: Etude Op.2 No.4 (l recommend Dasha Kazan's recording on youtube)
Brahms-Cziffra: Hungarian Dance No.5
Bach-Tausig: Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor
Rachmaninoff: Etudes Tableaux Op.39 No.6 (Lisitsa or Perahia's recording on youtube)
Rachmaninoff: Moment Musical No.4 (Lugansky on youtube)
Chopin Etude Op.25 No.11
Liszt: Mephisto Waltz No.1
Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No.12
Liszt: Transcendental Etude Nos 2/4/8/10/11/12
