Thanks for replying Wert and Perfectpitch!  I'm an adult student- piano is just my hobby.  My teacher gave me this piece to play about a year ago, but I found it to be a little too demanding for me at the time.  The other Brahms pieces I've played are not so straight foward either.  Also the piece is not musically something I would listen to for enjoyment.  So now I'm back at it.  Not the whole thing, but some of the more difficult variations.  Also I've never really heard the piece, so it's not always clear when the pedal should be used and what the general sound of each variation should be.  So if I have some questions in the next couple of months, is it alright to PM either one of you for help?

Looks like you two are SERIOUS pianists!
