piano not holding pitch
on: July 23, 2010, 08:24:55 PM
Hello. I have a 10 year old 6'3" Estonia that has been great up until the past year. Suddenly it seems that it can't hold a tuning. It used to go about 8-9 months before it started to sound noticeably out of tune. This past year, I've had it tuned every 4 months and it sounds bad soon after. Some of the pitches sound like they "bend" when played. I probably need to call someone in, but I don't know who. My usual tech has always done a great job and is respected in our area. Any advice?

Call another tech in for a second opinion if you feel the need. An RPT would be advisable:

4 months is not bad at all for a piano, especially if you are a professional pianist or serious student. It depends on the weather conditions where you live. As the seasons change, your piano will need a tuning.
Where I live, we have had spells of high humidity and low humidity all spring and into the summer this year. It has thrown the tuning of my piano off several times.
When you say "not holding pitch" how much does your piano go off? Do all the strings shift pitch relatively equally or are there ranges in the piano that go much more out of tune than others? Are certain notes repeat offenders?
You may wish to have your tech check out the pin block of your piano as well.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

My piano has also gone in and out-of-tune a lot this summer; I think it is the humidity.
During a recent brief heatwave my piano ranged from amazingly out-of-tune to nicely tuned in the course of a day; it was related to my use of Air Conditioning! When the humidity was extremely high, the piano was out-of-tune, when the humidity was lowered the piano sounded much improved.
I have a hygrometer on my piano to keep track of relative humidity; just a thought ...
