Piano in the family....
on: July 31, 2010, 04:05:53 AM
How do you guys who live with family--- whether married and maybe kids, or not yet in school (still with parents, sibs)-- fit the piano into the family? Do you have support, or does your family get annoyed? Any good ideas about making it work well all around?
For me and my two siblings, my dad had to divide the living room and build a wall
Around performance time, though, it can still get rough with all the practice. Going to school soon will help......
I'd like to hear about others though, how you deal with it or if it's even an issue

When I was in high school, I practiced a lot. I am the only one in my family who listens to and plays classical, and that's always what I was working on. I would practice the same song over and over until I got it right. They would get annoyed, and I was often asked to stop.
For Christmas, my older brother gave me a Phantom of the Opera book. When I opened it, he smiled and said, "Now you can play some
good
music." It is good music, and I did learn to play it, but if only my parents and sibs could appreciate Mozart...
I always wished I was born into one of those musical families where practicing for hours a day was expected, not discouraged.
I get to practice more now than I did then. My husband doesn't mind (he thinks I'm amazing
), and my kids are just used to it. I can even play while they are sleeping, because I've been doing it since they were babies.
I've had a few neighbors tell me that they can hear me play when they walk by. I always wonder if I'm bugging any of the ones who live nextdoor.
