Possible injury?
on: August 09, 2010, 03:04:26 PM
Lately, the fourth and fifth fingers(mostly fifth) on both hands are beginning to hurt. This pain is usually just in those fingers and not in the entire hand or arm, unless I play a lot after the first signs of pain. I thought that after taking a weeklong vacation and not playing would heal my fingers. However, this did not do much.I usually practice a lot, so I don't think this came from practicing too much. Does anybody know what kind of injury that I may have. Thanks

Unless you provide more specifics there is little we can do.

so are you sitting too close to the piano and tipping your outer hands out and down? When you play with your hand bent outward from the wrist, and particularly when you play things that use a "big" and open hand, or if your hand is small relative to the intervals you are playing, even if your wrists are at a proper level, the open 5th finger and hands tipped outward and down with your elbows held close in relation to your body might be the culprit. So try sitting farther away from the piano, allowing your elbows to relax out from your body and keep your wrists in line with the bones in your arm. This will help to limit that stressful position, and though it can't be completely eliminated, you should feel a little better.
