Oh come on - it isn't that expensive... I bought the whole set of Ballades for $49 (AUS).

Just buy the thing. I buy the music to all the pieces I play.

On the other hand, Gold membership is even less expensive and provides access to a sizeable library of "PS Urtext" scores beyond one set of Chopin's works.

Since joining as a Silver member, I've wondered what the PS Urtext scores are exactly and how they differ from other urtext editions (or other editions generally).  On whose scholarship are they based?  What's the consensus concerning their value and usefulness?

FWIW, I wasn't sure what specific "urtext" the OP was referring to.  There are, obviously, a number of editions that are (or claim to be) such.

FWIW - I love these abbreviations.  I'm SO behind the times.  well, I went to look it up (didn't want someone yelling at me to google it...) and it can mean, "For what it's worth"  or "For who is wondering".  I'm assuming you meant the second, right?

Actually, I meant "for what it's worth"; until now, I wasn't aware of the second meaning.

I don't think the Paderewski edition is too expensive (but it may). I actually recommend that OVER the Henle Urtext.

Piano Street Urtext? Become a Gold Member. I'm not one, but it's not too expensive.

Well, if I had cards I would buy it of course.
I don`t now even how to use them.
The first ballade (Urtext) was given on this site for free.
But I need Urtext of Ballade 3 opus 47.
It`s very useful and quite interesting to look through urtexts.
Very often editors "improved" something in the score.
I have many editions of this ballade but can`t get any urtexts.
If someone has, please, send it to my email
dmitrybachinsky@gmail.com
Would be very grateful,
b.

I agree, the Ballades cannot be that expensive.  Just don't purchase the Peters edition.  My copy has never properly stayed open on the music rack, and I have found this to be the case with other Peters editions.

But Dover has it in spades: they fall apart the first time you put them on the music rack.  You get what you pay for.  One particular Dover score I bought started to self-destruct even on the way home from the music store.

I particulary like the Henle Verlag editions... They've done me well considering the wear and tear I go through on them.

Paderewski is not expensive where I live.  I've seen the ballades volume for around $15.  Much prefer it over Henle.

If you want a really good edition for Chopin try Ekier.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

The Mikuli edition is available on that huge public domain site which I'm not sure if I'm aloud to mention - he was Chopin's student and from what I hear the edition is quite good.

Besides that, there really is no such thing as an urtext Chopin as there are soooo many different readings that Chopin himself authorised.  The Ekier tried to include all the differences in their performing notes (more like a separate book).

But seriously, just but it!  Especially if you're that serious about having an 'urtext'.  It's standard rep and you'll always come back to it!
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

try imslp.org

This website has the paderawski edition of the ballades. It also includes the mikuli edition, scholtz edition and the kullak edition.

hope this helps :)
