which scales do not go well with which chords?
on: August 16, 2010, 04:06:08 AM
Hi All,

I am from a non-english music forum.
My music theory is not that good so  I am not that confident to answer a question from a member:

Here is the question
which scales do not go well with which chords?

Thanks

The answer to your question is a complex one and can't be completely answered quickly.

Chords are (or can be seen to be) essentially derived from scales. The C major scale give you the C major chord. You find the chord by 'arpeggiating' the scale, or in other words taking the first, the third and the fifth note of of the scale (if it's a three note chord aka a triad). YOu there for can conclude that you can play a c major scale over a c major chord. Like wise you could play a c minor scale over a c minor chord. This is probably the simplest starting point.

However it by no means ends there. I would recommend you get a book on theory, or browse youtube for lessons on music harmony, theory, improvisation. Asides from that you can also experiment. If it sounds good it works!
