Buying a Digital Yamaha Piano..NEED HELP!
on: August 18, 2010, 09:04:09 AM
Hello, recently I moved out to the Texas, and as a result, I no longer have access to a piano here. So I've decided to buy a digital one until I have enough money to buy a grand.
Anyway, my budget is around $1000 and I want to try Yamaha brand.
I've been looking for a long time and really need your advice.
What digital piano should I get with that kind of budget?
How good would it sound compared to an acoustic?

The build-in speakerset allways sounds pretty lousy, so you'll have to play with headphones. Wich also means trying out the digital piano's in the shop with (good) headphones. The technique of the keyboards are all pretty much the same, so wich to choose is matter of taste.
So i'd advice trying out alot of digital piano's with headphones and pick one you like most

Hey welcome.
Before getting locked into Yamaha, try many pianos in a store. Maybe you would prefer an other brand.
Anyway, i possess a Yamaha Clavinova CLP320 (i also don't have enough money to buy better). I tried many pianos in store and this was the one I can afford that suited me the best (it can be different for you).
However, after more than 6 months of use, i find 3 major defects:
-The keys are to hard to push compared to an acoustic piano (this is getting fast pieces harder and more painful)
-It is very difficult to get dynamics as you need to barely touch the keys to get piano and to crush them to get forte, so pp and ff are impossible and the difference between 2 next dynamics are too far as regards the force needed to press the keys.
-The audio speakers are not powerful enough as you don't get the entire dynamics except if you turn the sound very loud. This is not necessarily a big problem because when directing the output into the helmet you get a perfect result.
About the CLP320 despite these defects i am very happy of it and advice it as a cheap piano.
The sound in terms of quality is different from an acoustic piano. If you compare to a bad acoustic piano, it is better as a digital one gets its sound from registering great concert pianos. However if you compare to a good acoustic piano, the acoustic one wins easily as the sound is less "computer-made" and more natural, alive.

I bought the Yamaha P140 2 years ago and am competely satisfied with it. I think this model has been replaced with the P155, a little more money but I hear the new features are worth it. LIke others have said, these pianos sound much better with headphones than through the cheap speakers. I have little experience with playing acoustic pianos and those I have played have all been awful, out of tune and some just downright broken, the digital just makes sense for a consistant reliable instrument.
