Piano teaching and tuning
on: July 22, 2004, 04:46:19 PM
Hello.
I've been teaching privately for over 3 years, and I was thinking of expanding my activity to include piano tuning (at least for my students at the beginning).
Does any of you tune pianos ?
Is it possible to be self-taught in this field (I really don't want to go to school for that) ? What books would you recommand to learn piano tuning properly ?
What tools do I need to get started, and how much do I have to invest in them ?
The tuner that services my piano uses a laptop computer, apparently to detect the pitches of the strings (I guess he's got a software that analyses the frequency of the vibrating strings). That would probably be easier than hearing if a string is out of tune and how off it is (for which you need a really good ear ; so the computer kind of replaces your ear, I guess). Does anyone know about this kind of software, where I can get one and for how much ?
Thank you.
