I found this self-indulgent. The listener can hardly hear the melody as a melody or the bass line as a line, and although I'm willing to assume the player can, that's not enough.  What he seems to think is lavishing attention to every note simply isolates each note.  There's no piece any more, except in his head.
I have to admit I only listened to the first minute- I couldn't take any more.

NO!
yes, it has many excellent qualities, but some truly appalling ones too. u play with no tempo whatsoever to a point that it makes me wanna puke loud! pedalling is problematic, technique isn't good, melodic lines while often have sung very beautifully are often badly interrupted. that said, your talent remains top notch, yet that itself isn't enough. work harder!

It's obviously not the "best rendition," though it may be a contender for the worst.

Posts by anafressari with links to YouTube vids by "rolipoli" have formed a consistent pattern of attention-seeking behavior; several more posted in other subforums at the same time as this one were deleted by management.

i don't agree. it is just a slipped-off-the-rail sort of art. if rolipoli is willing to fix it and it can be heavenly.

That's okay.  Neither do I agree with you that this person's "talent remains top notch."  In my opinion, there's no basis for that statement; judging from this video, I would even say it's insulting to people who do have "top notch" talent.

And now that quasi-serious discussion has commenced, the OP's goal is apparently realized:  NOTICE ME!!!!!!!!!!  Management should have deleted this thread along with the others.

I must say that as much as I hate to, I enjoy it. Except the middle section, which sounded like a construction zone. Very interesting rendition!

It is not a traditional interpretation, yet it has some very interesting ideas.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I'm dying to hear this.  My computer's audio is presently on the brink.  I'm also curious to hear the polonaise fantasy.  I feel like I'm in a bubble and can only see people's mouths moving...

What are the "many excellent qualities"?

It is not a traditional interpretation, yet it has some very interesting ideas.

Can you explain what those "very interesting ideas" are?

As I was unable to discern either excellent qualities or interesting ideas, I'm curious about what I've apparently overlooked.

I don't find this rendition interesting at all, in fact I'm amazed how finally took so much attention. There must be something weird and irresistible which catch so many attention in these kind of threads.

Talking about this interpretation, is the best rendition? I guess not. The slowest? Maybe. For sure, it is one of the most boring ones. I know that the idea of the interpreter is to make it the most interesting and as much expressive as possible but instead of this he managed to play in a pretentious, void and shallow way, choosing random tempi and dynamics with no real direction or musical form.

With all my respect, I don't think this is really an interpretation but a caricature of what this marvelous nocturne is.

isn't it self explanatory? have you watched his other vids?

and i am amazed how many people haven't found his videos interesting. he is an artist - tho as a pianist, his technique may be poor due to the lack of training. yet, his talent is monumental:  natural, visionary, and very original. we need to learn alot from him, on the other hands he only needs to learn a little, if anything, from any of us.

he plays marvelously musically. if you don't find him interesting, do not expect that words supporting his artistry will ever convince you.

It seems a number of people here are trolling or playing an elaborate hoax.  Emperor's new clothes, maybe?

Here's a clue:  nobody with the talent imputed to this person would ever describe himself or his performances as "the best."  Even SCP, the most breathtaking example of Dunning-Kruger effect I've encountered to date, didn't possess that kind of hubris.

No, I don't feel superior or happier.  Why would I?  I simply believed Boileau's observation was apposite here.

When I asked you a simple question (“What are the many ‘excellent qualities’”?), the most “honest answer” you could provide seemed to be, in essence, that one who doesn’t appreciate the performance isn’t capable of appreciating it.  I don’t think that suffices as a credible explanation for the appeal of a recording you described in these words:

Quote
“yes, it has many excellent qualities, but some truly appalling ones too. u play with no tempo whatsoever to a point that it makes me wanna puke loud! pedalling is problematic, technique isn't good, melodic lines while often have sung very beautifully are often badly interrupted. that said, your talent remains top notch, yet that itself isn't enough.”

So I have another question:  what is the motivation to defend and even applaud as “genius” a performance that doesn’t even rise to a standard of mediocrity?  Perhaps your most outrageous statement was that “we need to learn alot from him, on the other hands he only needs to learn a little, if anything, from any of us”;  I think that’s offensive to those who actually approach their practice with artistry and craftsmanship and who possess the requisite technique for musical communication.

Assuming you were even serious (and it’s now apparent that you are), I was hoping you could defend your statements with concrete reasons or explain yourself with genuine answers.  Even if you cannot, maybe this should be considered the “final food to serve on the table” anyway.  It’s nonsensical to waste further time or energy on anything so absurd, especially (as was mentioned previously) considering all the truly praiseworthy recordings posted in this subforum by competent musicians that go relatively unnoticed.
What passes you ain't for you.

Well, you have to admit one thing.  This guy is true to his own being, and relects exactly the essence of his character and personality in his playing.  As I tried to listen and follow his interpretation, it dawned on me that he plays exactly the way he expounds his philosophy on those bizarre youtube clips.  He's on an eternal tangent that only he can understand.  I can't make sense of his gibbering talk and I can't make head or tale of this nocturne.  There's absolutely no sense in his arbitrary accents, tempi, and colors.  I don't hear any conception whatsoever.  Where's the unity?  Where's the picture? Music is much much more than this.
I just plain don't get it.

I notice that several people have said in different words what I said at the start: There's no piece except in his own head.
The other possibility is that he's simply mocking a particular brand of performance to see what people will say.
