Philip Glass: Solo piano
on: October 16, 2010, 12:10:31 AM
I recently ordered a book of solo piano works by Philip Glass. I have never played any of his music but I am a huge fan and would like start playing some Minimalist pieces, I love the hypnotizing nature of it.
Has anyone ever played some glass before? What am I getting into? I know some of it can be fiendishly hard because of speed and the difficulty of maintaining steady patters and rhythms.

As a performer and casual composer of minimalism myself, the focus is on stamina and consistency--if you intend to play something 35 times and you want it to sound the same 35 times without accents or nuances, well, that can be extremely difficult to pull off.
Of course Glass isn't
literally
like this, but you get the idea.

Yeah, I have started playing through "Metamorphosis" I-V and that is the biggest issue I'm work on with my technique. Trying to keep everything very steady and dynamically even, but I am enjoying it. I think the music is very beautiful and calming....especially at the end of a long practice session it calms me down.
