my lil observation
on: October 30, 2010, 04:42:02 PM
i find many ps members are specially gifted in the field of delivering insults. the number of threads which contains mindless bickering, sniping of each other's head, degrading tones and other offensive language is by no means low. of course it makes exciting reading and all. but gosh, it is just so impressive how many of the members are really should i say, skillful? their innate talents in this regard cannot be underestimated. fighter, high caliber sniper, debater, insultor, all in here pianostreet.com. hah!

rather ironic, when it comes down to piano playing, which is more relevant a subject matter, only very few of the member are truly good players. i can count only with my one hand of those recordings in the audition room that have left me impressed.

the final conclusion based on talents and performances of this forum:
Major=offensive language; Minor=piano.

dignity, love and joy.

Names?  Or, rather, aliases?  Strange you should post this now.  I haven't seen any mud-slinging lately.

I rather suspect that there are considerably more very good pianists on this forum, than just those who post recordings.

As for me, I am much better at insults than piano.

I find irony in this very post, which could be perceived as at least as offensive as the content it purports to condemn.  Calculated hyperbole (as far as I can tell, the real incidence of abusive conduct here is very low) and insulting canards (no basis exists for claiming that “only very few of the member are truly good players”), directed publicly at unspecified targets, could actually be characterized as sniping.

Anyway, someone who truly believes that the norms of behavior at Piano Street are unacceptable does have options.  Other forums exist in which a “family” atmosphere is openly enforced and moderators are both visible and heavy handed.

It’s good that choices exist, and it’s easier to put on slippers than to carpet the world!  :)

Most of the insults on here are quite lame because we must stay within the rules of the forum. We also have to be careful not to misinterpret what we may think as an insult as merely an opposing opinion on an issue. Some people feel like they have to get others to believe in what they believe otherwise the situation is not resolved, this highlights ones insecurity with their own ideas as they require approval of nameless faces on the internet. If people insult me online I certainly do not take it personally but it is enjoyable to watch them squirm if you choose to play with them. If one takes the mature approach you should simply ignore posts that try to encourage argument, but the internet is not a serious place like this and we are not conducting professional business here, so now and then we can have fun with silly peoples ideas now and then can't we?

Recordings to me do not prove anything, it is one snippet of time. You can make 1000 recordings and choose the best or practice a small amount of pieces to death then record them. Recordings are safe and constructed image of a musician. To me this small window may tell us about a pianists ability but certainly we should not base our opinion on what someone says on recordings they might present. I am also not interested in someones piano ability but I am interested in what they have to say on a piano forum no matter what background they come from (I don't have the time to research into everyones background or think that there is any connection between piano playing ability and expressing personal ideas on musical learning, a pianoforum online is used to filter through knowledge of peoples personal ideas on music, if you wanted what is considered mainstream then go to a university or loan some good books). Questions are always good, but I agree that too many people try to question a person personally which is a waste of time but can produce amusing discussions.

There are people who do not play piano well that have amazing ideas on music, I get it all the time from my young students who describe how they are thinking and give me great insights into the thought processes of children when it comes to music. Hearing about beginners struggles with the piano at all age levels is filled with wisdom and knowledge if you listen and consider carefully.

My final conclusion based on looking at the content of the Audition Room Index, is that the standard here is generally above average. There are quite a few exceptional individuals who post recordings here of world class standard which to me is very impressive. However I have heard certain individuals who post amazing recordings but what they contribute to online discussion is quite below par compared to others that might play not as good as them.
