Mozart piano sonata no 20 ?
on: November 07, 2010, 08:14:01 PM
Is this really Mozart?
its look like a Beethoven !!
Please Any information or record about it .
foot note "this work has been accepted by the earlier authorities as a veritable sonata by Mozart , but kochel (thematic catalogue) expresses doubt as to its claim to be so considered"

Too good for Mozart.
It is Eberl.

I'm not a musicologist but this writing does not seem characteristic of Mozart. Maybe it's a work from a pupil of him or a pupil of Clementi or Dussek...
EDIT: I've just read Thalbergmad reply. Whoa. Impressive :-)

Thank you
Anton Eberl i found it
)))))))))
Anton Eberl was a friend of Mozart and he was probably also his pupil. As a pianist he toured Germany, accompanied by Mozart’s widow. From 1796 till 1800 he was Kapellmeister in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Poor old Eberl, this was not the only time this happened to him. There were also a set of variations and I think a sonata that was attributed to Mozart. I guess he should have been happy that his music was considered to be good enough.
An interesting alternative (along with Clementi and Woelfl) to those that wish to stray off the well beaten Mozart/Beethoven path.
The piano concertos are tuneful and well thought out, with the Op.40 in E flat conceivably the better & more Beethoven like. Been ages since I played it & the mention of his name is giving me the urge.
Good composer that would appear to be unjustly neglected.

It is unusual that a piece I have played is mentioned in this place.
I can now go back to being unimpressive

Fascinating! I remember the piece from my old Augener Mozart edition, which includes it though with the warning that its authenticity as Mozart was doubtful.
Just found the following poignant paragraph on wikipedia:
"
There was no composer whose works were more frequently passed off as Mozart's than Eberl. Even more surprising was the documented fact that there was no protest from Mozart against the use of his name on Eberl's compositions. Eberl, a friend and student of the great man, did mind but was too timid to take action until after Mozart had died. Finally, he published the following notice in a widely read German newspaper, "However flattering it may be that even connoisseurs were capable of judging these works to be the products of Mozart, I can in no way allow the musical public to be left under this delusion." Despite this, his works still continued to be published under Mozart's name.
