Books/Dvd recommendations?
on: November 17, 2010, 09:22:25 PM
Hi all, I'm an adult beginner with no teacher but myself ;-) and am learning with the help of Alfred's course, random sheet music, and Chang's online book, as well as this forum.

I want to get some books or dvds to aid in my learning. Any recommendations? I've seen one piano course that goes for $150 but it sold on some sort of affiliate program and so you can't find any "genuine" reviews for that one. There are various how to play piano dvds on Amazon, as well as a few books, but I'm not sure which are good. Recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

My honest advice to you my friend is to forget all of that crap and get a teacher.

$150 should buy you a few lessons and they will be a million times more value than some overpriced online rubbish.

Good luck.

I appreciate your response and I understand where you're coming from - however, at this stage in my life I am caring full time for my three small children and cannot practice until after they are in bed for the night. There is no way for me to take lessons unless I can find a teacher who offers them at 9pm. In lieu of waiting for that happen, I'd prefer to move forward with my learning myself with whatever resources I can use on my own time.

Again, your honest reply is appreciated.  :)

Incredibly I used to take lessons at 9pm, but I think that was rather unusual.

If you search through the students part of this forum or posts by ex member Bernhard, you will find a wealth of information that is of more value than anything you can buy.

I have found DVD's of considerable use for banjo, but never seen a piano one.

Thank you, Thal! I have done a lot of poking around on the student's forum, and have found many helpful posts from Bernhard (and others, seems your name is pretty familiar too  ;) ).  I've printed up a couple of his posts and I'm sure will print more as I progress and am able to comprehend more of what he's saying. At my level, a good bit of it is over my head, but I have no doubt he knows his stuff.

Good to know, though, that what I'm getting here is probably just as good as any printed material I could purchase.  ;)

Still, if anyone has personally used dvds or read books that you feel added something to your piano education....do share.
