Absolute beginner ask for help!
on: November 20, 2010, 04:16:03 PM
Hello, everyone.
My name is ace and I am 22, I want to learn to play the piano.
Recently I am looking for a piano to buy,I am still a student, so I don't want to spend $1000 on it.
I want to ask, what if I buy a second-hand classic piano, does it affect on learning? What do I need to pay a tension on?
and last question,Am I too old to learn to play the piano?
Thank you very much.
Ace

Depends where you are. You need someone who knows about pianos to take a look. I bought a top of the line refurbished Canadian upright (1904) for $300 in Nova Scotia last summer. Miracles are possible.

Ace,
First I would like to welcome you to our little family and good luck in your endeavors.
Learning piano is cool at any age. I'm 59 and teaching myself and enjoying it immensely.
I too didn't want to spend a lot so I decided on a electric keyboard. A Yamaha PSR that has touch response keys that feel like, has action and sound, of a grand.
You might want to check out the portable route. Just make sure that whatever you get has either touch sensitive, weighted or semi-weighted keys. Just a suggestion. Of course look at your options and by all means find a piano or keyboard that pleases you.
Best to you....
Musically, Jimbo

Hi, Jimbo
Thank you for the suggestion, I'll go and have a look,I think that is option.I didn't thought about that. I thought learning classic piano use the classic piano is the best way.The keys, the sensitive, the feelings are all different from the electric keyboard. However, I'll take your advice and have a look in that way.Thank you very much.
Have fun everyday!

Depends on your neighbours. If you're free to make as much noise as you like you want a real piano.

I have a grand but I cant play it except when I`m alone. My house has a great garden but neighbours, when I play in my grand, dont like...One day, as I`m a medical doctor, one of them asked me if I could suggest a good drug for headache
So, I bought a Roland digital piano HP307 and I`m satisfied with it. In Lisbon, Portugal, where I life, 2000 Euros. Have a look in the site of Roland. (NB: this is not publicity, I have nothing with Roland, ok?)

I live in a block of flats and play nearly everything apart from drums. A nightmare I suppose! especially as nearly all my neighbours are silent. I practice on a clavichord and a piano built in 1800 (both of which are quite quiet). Also I built an 8 inch thick cube of sound insulation around my modern upright! I have a digital - I hate it.
